Lawyers, Conflict & Transition Conference, QUB, 13 October 2016

The Lawyers, Conflict & Transition team are delighted to announce details of our final project conference to be held at QUB (Canada Room & Council Chamber, Lanyon Building) on Thursday 13 October 2016.

Full details can be found here .

The main conference themes are: Lawyers and Legal Ethics in Conflict and Transition; Lawyers and International Justice; Cause Lawyers and the Struggle for Justice; and Lawyers and Dealing with the Past.

We look forward to welcoming to QUB an excellent range of international and local speakers. These include: barrister and legal academic, Alex Batesmith, who will reflect on his experience as a United Nations prosecutor in Cambodia and Kosovo; Professor Bill Bowring who combines his academic work on human rights with practice at the Bar (frequently appearing in the European Court of Human Rights, and advising the Council of Europe, European Union, OSCE, and United Nations on human rights, minority rights and related issues); Israeli academic, Dr Ron Dudai, who works across the fields of human rights, social movements, transitional justice, and punishment and social control; Dr Christopher Lamont, a specialist on law and justice in post-revolutionary Tunisia; and Dr Nicola Palmer, a South African academic who recently published a widely acclaimed study of criminal justice in post-genocide Rwanda.

Locally based speakers, including Professor Kieran McEvoy, Professor Louise Mallinder, Dr Anna Bryson, Professor Cath Collins, Dr Rachel Killean and Dr Julie Norman, will present a diverse range of papers on the themes outlined above.

The project will be brought to a close with an exploration of the highly topical issue of lawyers and dealing with the past in Northern Ireland. This discussion will be led by well-known criminal defence lawyer, Niall Murphy (partner at Kevin Winters & Co).

Places at the conference are limited.
